The DFDS Fleet
DFDS operates 64 vessels. Measured in gross tons, Ro-Ro freight ships make up 52% of our entire fleet. Other types of vessels are passenger ships, Ro-Pax ships that are combined passenger and ro-ro ships, container ships, side-port and tramp ships.
Our five passenger ships are all owned 100% by DFDS. These are our most specialised vessels. Parts of the ro-ro fleet are specialised to meet demands in terms of vessel speed, size and speed of loading/unloading. These vessels are primarily deployed in the North Sea. The ownership share for the whole of the Ro-Ro fleet is 50.
The charter period for chartered tonnage varies from a few months to up to ten years.
A modern fleet
DFDS has a modern fleet of ro-ro fright ships with an average age of 7.4 years. The average age of the passenger ships was just under 20 years at the end of 2007. These ships are well-functioning and thoroughly modernised.
DFDS has contracts for four newly built Ro-Ro freight ships. The first ship, the TOR CORONA, was delivered in February 2008. The last one of the four is scheduled to be delivered at the end of 2009.
Furthermore, a large Ro-Pax newbuilding will enter our fleet in May 2009. The plan is to deploy the ship on the Baltic Sea in order to increase both passenger and freight capacity.
