Those involved in the project are Norsk Hydro's
operations in the Grenland area and in Holmestrand, plus
Borealis AS, Norske Skog ASA and Elkem-PEA. DFDS Tor Line
is a major operator on the North Sea, especially since they
in November 1998 purchased the North Sea Line from Fred.
Olsen & Co.
The purpose behind this concept is to increase
quality and provide for cost-effective logistic solutions
for the Norwegian industry, both on the short and the long
term.
The industrial companies involved export a major share
of their production to markets on the Continent and in the
UK.
The aim is to have the new concept in operation from
mid-May 1999. Two ro-ro vessels will be deployed on the new
route plying a liner service involving three weekly direct
calls at Herøya (Hydro Porsgrunn Industrial Park),
Rønningen (Borealis) and Rotterdam, in addition to two
weekly calls at Holmestrand (Hydro Aluminium) and at
Immingham.
The industrial parties involved are convinced this new
transport system will considerably increase their
competitiveness. Not only regarding savings in connection
with logistical costs but also increased frequency of
departures and assured quality product forwarding and
handling.
The new service in proximity of the major export
companies will also contribute to the mentioned companies'
competitiveness in the long run.
Environmental aspect
The co-operating industrial companies also through
increased sea transports emphasise on contributing to
improved transport efficiency thus more
environment-friendly.
The process of coordinating the logistic strategies and
systems of the various companies has been demanding. The
new system will also be available to other shippers and
forwarders with goods suitable for ro-ro transport to or
from the Continent and UK.
The new concept can provide an interesting
alternative to other transport solutions within the Oslo
fjord-region and can furthermore relief traffic pressure in
other ports of the region.
