DFDS Tor Line's Swedish shore-based organisation and the
ro-ro vessel Tor Belgia were recently environmentally
certified in accordance with ISO 14 001.
Tor Belgia is the first of our 16 vessels being
environmentally certified. A total environmental review of
the Tor Belgia has taught us what now forms the basis of
our continuing environmental work on all the ships in our
fleet. To establish the ship's environmental impact in the
form of air pollutants we have measured the emissions.
Environmental systems demand improvement. By working
towards concrete environmental targets we will be able to
continuously measure improvements.
We have found that the most effective way of continuing
our environmental work on board the ships is to link the
internationally mandatory ISM certification, preventive
environmental work and the voluntary ISO 14 001
certification. In 1999, we will implement environmental
management systems on the Tor Flandria and the Tor Scandia.
Our objective is to incorporate two ships a year into the
environmental management system.
Environmental work requires commitment. All our
personnel are given training and receive information on an
on-going basis via internal newsletters etc. All waste
management has been made more effective - both on board the
ships and in our offices. On board, chemicals are managed
and handled in a more environmentally friendly way and
containers for hazardous waste have been installed.
