In future, the passenger ship, m.s. DUKE OF SCANDINAVIA,
which used to operate the Esbjerg-Harwich route as the DANA
ANGLIA, will sail every other day from Copenhagen and
Gdansk, respectively, calling at Trelleborg, Sweden, en
route. The DUKE OF SCANDINAVIA has capacity for 1240
passengers and 416 passenger cars or 45 lorries/trailers.
Ole Frie, Presiding Director of DFDS A/S, discloses that
two-thirds of the car deck will be occupied by about 30
lorries or trailers. The new route focuses on the market combination Zealand,
southern Sweden and north-east Poland, an area that to date
has not enjoyed good transport and travel options and where
we expect both passenger and freight traffic to
increase. The Poland route, a strategic initiative in the Baltic
region, is not expected to generate satisfactory financial
results in the first two years. Passenger figures for the
first twelve months are expected to reach about
170,000. ‘We are looking forward to introducing our customers to
this exciting new destination. Poland has such a lot to
offer: 528 km of scenic bathing beaches, countless castles
and manor houses, a wealth of historic towns with beautiful
architecture and cultural monuments, good shopping
opportunities, friendly people and last, but not least,
Poland has not yet become tourist territory, it is a
convenient distance from Denmark and has attractive price
levels. All in all, eight good reasons to visit Poland. Naturally we are also looking forward to inviting
Swedish and Polish guests to this route. Surveys indicate
that south-east Sweden and north-east Poland offer great
potential for travel based on our concept: maritime
experiences with one overnight stay between two interesting
destinations. Not to mention the opportunities for
duty-free shopping on board,’ concludes Thor
Johannesen. Yours sincerely
