The second of the two new Polish-built ro-pax vessels is
due to enter service on DFDS’ combined passenger/freight
route between Esbjerg and Harwich on 17 June 2003. She will
replace the first ro-pax vessel, the DANA GLORIA, which is
planned to be taken over by DFDS’ Lithuanian subsidiary AB
Lisco as part of the strategy to renew the fleet and
enhance the present Baltic ro-pax concept.
The second vessel will be named the DANA SIRENA,
re-establishing the DFDS tradition of incorporating the
word DANA in the name. The last vessel in the DFDS fleet to
have DANA in her name (19 in all) was the DANA ANGLIA,
which was re-christened the DUKE OF SCANDINAVIA in
connection with the entry into service on the
Copenhagen/Trelleborg-Gdansk route.
The DANA SIRENA is currently docked at the Remontowa
shipyard in Gdansk. The rebuilding will include an
additional 140 cabins, increasing passenger capacity to
600. Public areas such as the restaurant and cafeteria
facilities will likewise be extended and upgraded to DFDS
Seaways’ standards.
DANA SIRENA has three car decks with a capacity of 2,510
lane metres or 166 lorries, and a service speed of 22.5
knots.
Three or four weekly departures will be offered in each
direction throughout the year. Demand for freight capacity
is expected to increase, not least because Germany’s
introduction of road tax on freight in September 2003
will make short-sea shipping more attractive for freight
customers, states Ole Frie, Presiding Director of DFDS
A/S.
