Keel Laying for the First of DFDS' Five Ro-Ro Newbuildings

On 10 February, a keel laying ceremony was held for the first of the five ro-ro vessels ordered by DFDS Tor Line and being built at Flensburg Shipyard.

Due for delivery at the end of September 2003, the ship is planned to enter service on DFDS Tor Line’s freight route between Gothenburg and Immingham, AngloBridge, in early October 2003, and will then be one of the largest ro-ro vessels in the North Sea area.

The ship will be named the TOR MAGNOLIA in connection with the launch on 23 May 2003.

The TOR MAGNOLIA will enter service on AngloBridge as the first replacement vessel for the newbuildings from the Italian shipyard, Fincantiera, the TOR SELANDIA and the TOR SUECIA built in 1999 and the TOR BRITANNIA, built in 2000. These ships will later service other routes, including BritanniaBridge, until two new ships from Flensburg Shipyard are delivered for BritanniaBridge in 2004.

Together with newbuildings two and three, due for delivery in January and May 2004 respectively, the entry into service of the TOR MAGNOLIA will significantly upgrade the Gothenburg-Immingham route. The freight capacity per ship will be increased by approx. 1,000 lane metres to approx. 4,000 lane metres, and the increase in service speed from 21.0 to 22.4 knots will reduce the crossing time.

AngloBridge currently operates the route between Gothenburg and Immingham with eight weekly departures in each direction. The three newbuildings from Flensburg will generate a capacity increase of about 40%.
