DFDS expands in Immingham

The extension to the DFDS Nordic Terminal in Immingham outer harbour was officially opened on 12 July 2006.

The terminal has been extended by 200,000sq.m. and three berths, and now covers a total area of 720,000 sq.m., and has totally six ro-ro berths.

”The extension, which has cost more than £40 million and was carried out in close collaboration with Associated British Ports (ABP), will be DFDS Tor Line’s supremely important freight transport hub, and consequently, the centre of DFDS Tor Line's northern European activities," said Ole Frie, Managing Director of DFDS A/S.

The terminal provides comprehensive stevedoring and freight handling services round the clock, seven days a week. It has a warehouse capacity of approximately 80,000sq.m, and is expected to handle a total of 5 million lane metres of freight in 2006.

The terminal currently employs 600 staff, but this latest development is expected to create a further 100 jobs.

Four ro-ro berths serve DFDS Tor Line's routes to Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, respectively, and with the delivery in June of the last of six newly-built ro-ro ships, the TOR FICARIA, DFDS Tor Line has consolidated its position as one of Northern Europe's leading ro-ro operators.

The annual amounts of freight handled have tripled since DFDS Tor Line began its activities in Immingham in 1995, and with the new Nordic Terminal Riverside, opportunities have been created for further growth.

Immingham is the English east coast’s largest port, and Britain’s largest by volume. The inauguration took place precisely 100 years after the first sod was cut of what is now Immingham Dock.
