Christmas is the time of fairy tales and miracles and Christmas in Denmark is no exception. Before Christmas, every resident and guest in Copenhagen becomes the actor in a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, the whole city turns into a gorgeous theater scene and the air has a light roasted almond flavour and a majical feel.
On the first Friday of November, the mayor of Denmark lights up the Christmas tree in the main square with festive dark sweet beer and hot wine being poured at bars. The shops are also decorated with festive items: Santa Claus, Danish elves and Christmas tree toys. Although the whole city is lighted - the brightest lights of all are in Tivoli Gardens.
A surprise to the residents and guests of the city is also being prepared at the Copenhagen embankment. Pedestrian alley, along the new bay, is being decorated with garlands and light bulbs with street musicians entertaining people with the national music. Cafe's, bars and restaurants are spread across the street inviting guests to sample the national cuisine and drinks Don't miss the delight of eating sweet roasted almonds with washed down with traditional hot wine called "glögg" in Denmark. Use this time to visit the shops and pick up some souveniers for loved ones back home.
