Challenge

The quest for a lean, effective Nordic distribution hub

Miele wanted to establish a new centrally located Nordic distribution hub that would allow them to minimise transportation distances in the region and help them respond quickly to customers’ needs.

They sought a strategic, trusted 3PL partner to identify the ideal site in the centre of gravity and introduce a new IT system to handle logistics and ensure that goods are delivered on time and in perfect condition.

Continual improvement and increased sustainability

Miele also wanted their preferred partner to show how workflows and warehouse operations could be continually improved and have the competencies to deliver more sustainable solutions throughout the value chain.

Solution

Reduced emissions construction

DFDS was awarded the project and developed a reduced emissions construction +10,000m2 state-of-the-art warehouse in Jönköping, Sweden, through adoption of energy saving software and presence-controlled LED lighting. Miele’s goods are transported from their global distribution centre in Germany and delivered to the new Nordic hub. From there, the goods are sent to destinations in Sweden, Norway, and Finland.

Wide range of deliverables

Our logistics contract with Miele includes managing in- and outbound flows with a dashboard showing real-time data, pick and pack, and a unique in-house workshop staffed by Miele where goods are being repaired on site. There’s also an outlet shop for B-appliances. Together in the future we will focus on continuously improving all initiatives.

“With a big implementation like this, you run into problems…but at that point, DFDS really showed their muscles and brought a strong team on site to get everything fixed.” - Vilhelm Boije, Director Supply Chain Management, Nordics & Baltics at Miele

Results

Handling over 50,000 units annually

Miele’s new distribution hub handles over 500 orders a day and more than 50,000 units are handled every year. Key Nordic customers rate Miele as one of the best suppliers in the region, thanks to their prompt delivery and the short lead time made possible by the new local hub.

Thanks to the optimisation of flows and location, Miele has been able to reduce its overall network emissions, achieving a 1,250-tonne CO2e reduction with its centrally positioned hub and proximity to their customers.
