Switching wheels for propellors

"I would strongly recommend DFDS’ short sea set-up to other companies because of the environmental benefits, on-time deliveries, and knowing the vessel arrives on time versus having trailers transporting the goods all the way across Europe."

Challenge

Need for a reliable, sustainable and cost-effective way to ship products

Traditionally, Norway’s Norske Porter’s logistics set-up relied on road transport. However, delays, inconsistent lead times, high freight costs, and a driver shortage impacting capacity prompted them to explore alternative solutions.

Norske Porter believed there must be a way to ship their products more efficiently and with a higher level of sustainability. They approached DFDS to help them optimise lead times, secure capacity and plan their logistics flow cost-effectively.

Solution

A multi-benefit switch in transportation

We recommended that Norske Porter consider transporting their goods by sea freight and proposed a short sea logistics solution. This option is not only more sustainable but also offers the advantage of a single point of contact through our customer service for all shipment planning.

Avoiding unnecessary challenges

Today, DFDS collects Norske Porter’s products in trailers and ships them from Ghent to Brevik for delivery in Larvik. This ensures reliable lead times to Norway, avoids irregular goods flows, and guarantees consistent deliveries with scheduled vessels.

Results

Improved efficiency, green profile and bottom line

A single point of contact through our Ghent office ensures smooth communication and quick response times at the loading site.

By switching to short sea transport, Norske Porter has bypassed capacity imbalances, driver shortages, and high road transport costs. This change has not only brought significant economic benefits, but also reduced the company’s CO2 emissions.

"The transition from road transport to short sea has been very smooth, and we know exactly when our goods will arrive. Our logistics flow has much improved now that we have fewer contact points.”
