Together we move closer to zero

Introducing DFDS Decarbonised Solutions to reduce your Scope 3 emissions. Simple and certified.

Emissions reduction certificate

Our emission reductions process is reviewed by an independent external auditor, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our CO2e Reduction Certificates. Each certificate is unique and refers to carbon savings associated with your specific shipments within our logistic network. The reductions are stored in our CO2e reduction bank and are available for customers who transport goods within our network.

The DFDS reduction system

When you invest in our new decarbonised solutions, revenues are reinvested in new low and zero-emission technologies that will help us accelerate the transition to net zero.

  1. Operations are decarbonised through the use of biofuel in our vessels and by introducing electrical trucks for road transport.

  2. Reductions are calculated by comparing the actual fuel used against a traditional fossil fuel, using emissions intensity factors from the GLEC framework, and the process is reviewed by our independent external auditor.

  3. The reductions are stored in our CO2e reduction bank.

  4. You can claim the reductions and report them to your Scope 3 emissions.

Comply with international standards

Our base CO2e emissions are calculated and reported according to the GLEC Framework – the global methodology for calculating and reporting on logistics emissions. Reductions from insetting are then calculated separately, based on default factors.

Our external auditor reviews and ensures that our emission reductions process is in accordance with the documented process, and that we never sell more reductions than we actually create.

We use biofuel certified by ISCC or RSB, global sustainability certification schemes for fuel production from waste feedstocks. Biofuel is a transition fuel that achieves lower GHG emissions than traditional fossil fuels.

Multi-year partnership with Danish Crown

We have entered into a 5-year partnership with Danish Crown to reduce emissions and jointly advance the transition to CO2-neutral transport. As part of the agreement, we have deployed electric trucks and trailers in Danish Crown's logistics network and will continue collaborating to develop innovative solutions and processes.

How can we help you?

When we talk about decarbonisation, we refer to the reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions from our ferry and road transport. In practice, today, we do this by switching from fossil fuel-powered transport to electric trucks on road and biofuel on vessels.

Transitioning the transport sector to net zero operations is an ongoing process – and we are just getting started. DFDS will continuously introduce new solutions, fuels and techniques to help you decarbonise your supply chain.

Our insetting solutions are flexible and can be added to any transportation flow without radically changing the setup. The savings are issued via annual certificates specifying the amount of tonnes CO2e reduced in your supply chain. Direct solutions are dependent on where we can source sustainable biofuel and/ or deploy electric trucks in our network. Talk to us about your specific transport to find out what we can offer you.

From 1 January 2024 maritime shipping emissions will be included in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). As a consequence, companies using DFDS services will receive a surcharge corresponding to their respective share of emissions.

Emission reductions made in our transportation network can be added as savings in your supply chain. In this way, you can reduce your ETS surcharge and accelerate progress towards your sustainability goals.
