DFDS Carbon Reduction Programmes

Carbon offsetting

Insetting vs Contribution - Understanding the difference

Decarbonising is not just a checkbox here at DFDS, it is our guiding principle, and we embrace the mission of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions for a brighter future.

Our Insetting and Contribution programmes are two important ways in which you can be part of our decarbonisation journey.

Insetting:

  • Insetting allows passengers to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions generated during their journey by directly supporting our internal carbon reduction projects
  • By purchasing Insetting credits, you support projects implemented within our operations that aim to lower emissions and make your journey more environmentally friendly
  • Insetting credits fund projects that use increased use of biofuel
  • Insetting is provided to customers, minus their ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) contribution. ETS is not a direct greenhouse gas reduction initiative, but insetting is. If a customer chooses to reduce their carbon via insetting, then ETS is no longer relevant and is therefore removed from the overall price when calculating voluntary contributions. This does not apply to external offset projects.

Contribution:

  • 'Contribution' provides customers with the opportunity to invest in future biofuel projects at DFDS, irrespective of their journey's CO₂e emissions
  • This serves as an essential donation to aid our transition towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations
  • While 'Contribution' doesn't offset the CO₂e generated during your journey, it allows you to play an active role in supporting our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

What is the Key Difference?

Insetting allows customers to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions generated during their journey by directly supporting our internal emissions reduction projects – primarily through increased use of biofuel.

Contribution, on the other hand, enables customers to invest in future biofuel projects at DFDS, irrespective of their journey's CO₂e emissions. This serves as an essential donation to aid our transition towards more sustainable/environmentally friendly operations.

We believe these options offer a direct and impactful way for our passengers to participate in our environmental efforts.

Please note that the cost of reducing emissions on a DFDS vessel by one tonne of CO₂e is currently dependent on our ability to source and use biofuels, which are limited and expensive.

What Insetting Projects Would I be Contributing Towards?

With a target of becoming net zero by 2050, DFDS is consistently developing initiatives that drive forward meaningful change.

Our main source of reducing emissions at sea is via the increased use of biofuel. Your contribution supports our efforts to transition to lower and near zero-emission marine fuels. These fuels produce fewer emissions compared to traditional options, helping us reduce our carbon footprint.

Why Choose DFDS?

By travelling with DFDS, you are choosing to make a difference. Our commitment to decarbonisation empowers you to be part of our mission to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a net zero future.  Join us on our journey.
