Midsummer night in Oslo

Oslo is high in the north - the sun rises even earlier in the summer and also late at night, so the Nordic nights are short. Thus, the capital of Norway is an excellent destination to experience such a natural event. Midsummer Night takes place on the weekend of 23rd June and is the shortest night of the year because it is not really dark. The festival is also called "Sankt-Hans-Fest" because it is celebrated before the day of remembrance of John the Baptist. For families and children, the Folkemuseum on Oslo's Bygdøy peninsula is a great destination for picnics, barbecues and romping for all ages. Exuberant mood is guaranteed!

Festive mood everywhere

All over Norway, the spectacular event around the midnight sun is celebrated until late at night with dancing, music, games, boat trips and bonfires. Along the coast, people flock with their boats on the fjords, to light a fire on one of the many small islands and sit there comfortably with family and friends. No one thinks about sleep here - the afternoon starts with a search for a nice place, so you can celebrate into the night tasting delicious fish and Norwegian beer.

Customs and traditions

An old belief is that young girls have to pick different plants and put them under their pillow at night to dream of the man they will marry. Even though this legend is an old tradition, many girls and young women wear homemade flower wreaths on Midsummer's Day. In the evening at about 11 pm the dusk sets in and the sky appears in a bluish light - sleep is unthinkable. In Oslo, you will find both the flair of a vibrant metropolis and numerous parks and green spaces to enjoy the celebrations in.
