2025 in review: How Pamela Lee championed change

The sea has a way of uniting us, whether through the everyday journeys of our passengers or the extraordinary journey of trailblazer Pamela Lee.

Pamela Lee and team celebrating

As the 2025 race season draws to an end, we look back on a year filled with growth, inspiration, and the powerful impact of the #EmpowHer movement.

Crossing the finish line

The Transat Café L’OR start village in Le Havre, Normandy, was the perfect setting to wrap up the year. With nearly 600,000 visitors gathering to celebrate the spirit of ocean racing, the atmosphere was alive with excitement.

For DFDS, this wasn’t just about the race to Martinique. It was a chance to celebrate everything we’ve achieved this year alongside skipper Pam Lee and the community that has rallied around her.

Our stand at the Start Village became a hub of activity, where visitors of all ages could experience the #EmpowHer spirit firsthand. From virtual reality crossings and interactive art walls to autograph signings with Pam and co-skipper Jay, it was a space to dream, explore, and connect.

But the most inspiring moments came from seeing young girls gaze up at the EmpowHer vessel, imagining themselves at the helm one day. It’s these moments that remind us just how much this partnership matters.

A transformative year

From her early-season training to her standout performances – and a life-saving rescue in between – Pam has proven time and again that she belongs at the forefront of ocean racing.

This year wasn’t just about racing, either – it was about resilience, mentorship, and creating space for the next generation of sailors.

The boat baptism for the EmpowHer vessel at the Transat Café L’OR was a particularly special moment for us all. This tradition, steeped in maritime history, took on new meaning as we celebrated what this boat represents: a commitment to empowering girls and women worldwide and fostering positive change in sailing and beyond.

Why #EmpowHer matters

The maritime industry has long presented challenges for women seeking to break through. Building on our commitment to promoting women in maritime through initiatives like the "Waves of Talent" program, our sponsorship of Pam and the #EmpowHer campaign is another step toward driving meaningful change.

This season, we’ve seen the impact of this movement firsthand. Young cadets had the chance to meet Pam and hear her journey, sparking thoughtful questions about navigation and inspiring excitement for what’s possible in maritime careers.

It’s a reminder that empowerment isn’t just about one person or one race – it’s about creating a ripple effect that inspires change across industries and communities.

Looking ahead to 2026

As the boats departed Le Havre and set course for Martinique, it felt like the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable year. But in sailing, every finish line is just the start of a new journey.

For Pam, 2025 has been a crucial year of preparation. Every race, every mile sailed, has been building toward the ultimate challenge: the Route du Rhum in 2026.

Next year, Pam will continue to push her limits, competing in more races and honing her skills for this legendary solo transatlantic event. We’re proud to stand by her side as she takes on this next chapter.
