The Moselle Valley
The Moselle Valley, Germany

The Moselle and Rhine Valleys

The Moselle and Rhine Valleys are among Germany’s most beautiful areas, with rolling hills, steep river valleys, stunning scenery and quaint villages. Serving as a contrast to the hustle of German cities, the Moselle & Rhine Valley regions are laid-back areas with wineries, castles and the ancient Roman city of Trier.

The Moselle River passes through France, Germany and Luxembourg and is surrounded by some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in Europe. The area around the river was first cultivated by the Romans almost 2000 years ago and has been the centre of historic cities and towns ever since Roman times.

The Rhine passes through Germany, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands, set in wonderful and dramatic valleys throughout.

Trier, Germany

What to see in the Moselle and Rhine Valleys?

Trier is an ancient city in the German area of the Moselle Valley, established under the rule of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus in 16 BC. The city is famous for its Roman heritage and an almost-Gallic charm. Trier is home to 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Porta Nigra, the ancient gateway to the city, and the medieval main market square.

Frankfurt is the biggest city in the Rhineland, and one of Germany’s most cosmopolitan and laid-back areas.

Germany’s Moselle Valley region is one of the best-kept secrets of European wine culture and is home to some fantastic varieties of grape such as Riesling, Bacchus and Müller-Thurgau.

Take a tour of one of the wineries and sample the delightful local wines, as well as combining them with local produce such as fish, poultry and meats.

There are also opportunities for cycling, hiking, kayaking, sailing, fishing and more.
