The city on the Baltic Sea can look back over a diverse history - founded in 1252, Klaipeda became the third largest city in Lithuania with about 183,000 inhabitants. Once part of Germany and many still known as Memel, you can still find architectural influences from this time in the city. In addition, Klaipeda is an important transport connection between East and West and has one of the most important ports on the East Coast, as the harbor remains mostly ice-free even in winter. More than 7,000 ships from 45 countries arrive in Klaipeda every year and around 20 million tons of cargo are loaded.
Klaipeda's highlights
Start your tour on the Theatre Square right in the heart of the old town, where the famous monument of the poet Simon roof "Ännchen von Tharau" as well as the city theatre can be found. There are numerous small sculptures scattered across the city: a park bench with chess board game, the golden miracle mouse and the black ghost are just a few examples. Especially recommended is a visit to the Sculpture Park and the Museum Memelburg. Along the river Dane there is the promenade with small cafes and traditional restaurants. The historic sailing ship and famous landmark of the city, "Meridianas", anchors here and shapes the cityscape.
Idyll on the Curonian Spit
The unique dune landscapes with beautiful beaches along the Baltic Sea are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are perfect for exploring on foot or by bicycle. A popular attraction is the Thomas Mann House in the fishing village of Nida. The summer house of the famous writer is now accessible as a museum and definitely worth a visit. In the north of the 98 km long headland in the district Smiltyne, is another popular attraction - the marine museum with dolphinarium is an experience for young and old. Culinary Lithuania
The Friedrich Passage offers restaurants and cafes as well as many small shops that invite you to linger and at the same time provide an insight into the history and culture of the country. For a slightly larger shopping trip, the Acropolis Centre offers a selection of shops of well-known, international brands. The culinary Lithuania is experienced in Klaipeda on the sailing ship "Meridianas," that as a modern, upscale restaurant has a special atmosphere. Visit the traditional Lithuanian brewery Svyturys and taste the different beers. The evening ends in charming bars along Zveju Street.
