Today, DFDS, the award-winning ferry operator, is bringing a taste of Amsterdam to Newcastle city centre, with a giant cake sculpture celebrating its popular Newcastle to Amsterdam route.

The spectacular vanilla-flavoured cake was designed by world-renowned cake artist, Michelle Wibowo, and enables people to experience a taste of Amsterdam right here in the UK. Featuring the city’s iconic canals, a row of narrow houses, a historic windmill and spectacular colourful tulip fields, the entire sculpture spans a staggering 7½ foot by 5 foot from end to end; taking Michelle over 100 hours to bake and decorate and weighing a total of 100kgs.

With daily departures from the Port of Tyne, and mini-cruises starting from just £70 per person1, DFDS’ Newcastle to Amsterdam route offers sightseers the perfect way to travel to one of the most-visited capital cities in Europe. With the option for consumers to take their cars with them, travelling with DFDS gives people the freedom to explore further and visit everything the surrounding regions have to offer.

From the beautiful Keukenhof Gardens which bloom with over seven million flowers every spring, to the 19 windmills of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Kinderdijk, travelling by ferry with DFDS makes discovering North Holland and its neighbouring provinces easier than ever.

On display for one day only, shoppers will be able to see the giant Amsterdam cake sculpture outside Haymarket Metro Station on Northumberland Street from 9:00am and pick up a slice for free from 12:00pm onwards.

On the creation of the spectacular cake, DFDS Vice President Kasper Moos, commented: “We’re incredibly excited to be celebrating one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals by giving the people of Newcastle a flavour of one of our most popular destinations. Our daily Newcastle to Amsterdam route is a convenient and affordable option for travellers who want the freedom to explore the beautiful regions that surround the city of Amsterdam. We hope the cake inspires people to visit the area for themselves - after all – travelling by ferry is a piece of cake!”
