DFDS and Hydro townhall: A new maritime highway

Discussion at the DFDS and Hydro townhall.

Hydro, one of the world’s leading producers of low-carbon aluminium, recently chose DFDS to handle aluminium products between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Vilagarcia in Spain. To support this New "backbone" RORO service, DFDS heavily invested in a dedicated vessel and specialised equipment. And, as the service approaches its first anniversary, DFDS invited Hydro to a joint townhall to discuss the challenges faced and the maritime solutions we are developing together.

Our Vision: Creating value for all stakeholders and ensuring Logistics as competitive advantage for Hydro” - Henrik Andreas Gjerpen, Head of Shipping at Hydro

A thorough plan and flexible collaboration

Nina Roepstorff, Head of the Logistics Transformation Office at DFDS, emphasised that the successful execution of the Rotterdam-Vilagarcia corridor was built on thorough preparation. Reflecting on the lessons learned from the project, she stressed the importance of "taking the time to do proper planning" and highlighted the necessity of "rigorous following up of risks and joint transparency when solving them".

For instance, when faced with delays to the supply of cassettes and winches, it was the partnership’s transparency and ability to collaborate – such as performing fittings at Hydro's site in Norway – that kept the project on track.

Safety as the foundation

Operational innovation at DFDS begins with a single priority: safety. Hydro made a strategic pivot to move into RoRo to minimize high-risk crane operations and manual cargo handling.

Safety is our license to operate; it is embedded in every decision we make and is the top priority for our logistics operations.” - Gerd Aalborg Aas, Vice President Logistics & Metal Management, Hydro.

The start of a digital journey

Hydro is now pushing the next step in its logistics strategy: greater digital transparency across the supply chain. As aluminium moves through ports, vessels, and terminals, the company aims to reduce manual processes and improve real-time visibility of equipment and cargo. Hydro has introduced GPS tracking devices in the cassettes used to transport aluminium, while DFDS provides vessel tracking across the route. For Hydro, this means better oversight of logistics assets and smoother coordination across terminals. For DFDS, it improves operational visibility and equipment management, helping teams plan movements more efficiently.

Primed for future growth

The relationship between DFDS and Hydro is more than transactional. It is a long-term strategic alliance built on shared values of safety, sustainability, and transparent strategic collaboration. Kasper Hægeland Svenningsen, Business Development Director & GAM at DFDS, shared the companies’ “Six commitments” which include a Decarbonised Solution & Innovation Workshop and exploring the use of electric trucks in the Netherlands. With both companies working towards reduced carbon emissions, this successful partnership is set to grow.

“We will work hard every day, so we deserve the right to be called a strategic priority partner.” - Kasper Damgaard, Vice President, Head of Strategic Sales at DFDS
