Getting to St Andrews
Getting to St Andrews from our port in Newcastle couldn’t be easier and the route follows one of the most beautiful coastlines in Britain. Take the A1 north from Newcastle following the coastal road through Berwick upon Tweed to Edinburgh. Then take the M90 and the A91 all the way to St Andrews. The whole journey should take around 3 hours. If you’re travelling from Newcastle by train, the nearest station to St Andrews is Leuchars, which is situated around six miles from the town.
History in St Andrews
There are many historical locations around the town with great visitor centres providing a wealth of information. St Andrews Castle is well worth a visit, with a modern visitor centre housing exhibits about the castle, as well as the infamous bottle dungeon and mines to explore.
You can purchase a joint ticket which allows you into the castle and St Andrews’ magnificent cathedral, which is a must see. The Cathedral’s ruins are truly spectacular – but they can only hint at the vast grandeur of what was once the largest church in Scotland.
Trips to the beach
No trip to St Andrews would be complete without a trip to the beach!
There are two main beaches, both winners of Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. West Sands is a stunning stretch of sand and is famous for being a filming location in the film Chariots of Fire. East Sands is a more sheltered beach and has an adjacent play area for smaller children.
What to do in St Andrews
If you’re a keen golfer, then St Andrews probably tops your list for golfing destinations. However, it has so much more to offer, whether you’re travelling alone, in a group or as a family, you’ll find many delights in and around St Andrews.
The main shopping area is concentrated in Market Street and South Street, with Bell Street and Church Street connecting the two principal thoroughfares. The town centre is also a great place to relax with a good selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs. Make sure you sample some traditional haggis and at least one of the local whiskeys on offer.
