Methodology

To identify France's most Cotswolds-like destinations, we reviewed 100 towns and villages across key French regions. We assessed them against characteristics associated with the Cotswolds, including preserved architecture, traditional building styles, heritage landmarks, attractive streetscapes and riverside settings.

Each location was then evaluated using Google Maps review language and Google search demand, measuring scenic and heritage-related mentions per 100 reviews, while lower search volumes indicated stronger hidden-gem potential.

1. Desk Research

We reviewed tourism resources, heritage listings and destination guides to identify towns with strong historic character and architectural consistency. Focus was placed on traditional stone buildings, timber framing, historic streets and the overall sense of preservation associated with Cotswolds-style destinations.

2. Google Maps Review Analysis

Google Maps reviews were analysed to understand visitor perception, focusing on descriptive terms such as ‘charming’, ‘beautiful’ and ‘picturesque’. This provided a measurable indication of how strongly each destination reflects the Cotswolds' visual and emotional appeal.

3. Search Demand Analysis

We also used Google keyword search data to assess public awareness and interest, analysing keyword volumes across location-based and tourism-related queries. Lower search demand, when paired with strong heritage and scenic qualities, was used to identify destinations with greater hidden-gem appeal.

4. Descriptive Words Per Review %

We analysed 50 Google reviews per town to determine how frequently descriptive keywords appeared. This produced a percentage score that reflects how often visitors describe each location in positive, picturesque terms – supporting the overall ranking.
