Christmas in Bremen

Christmas in Bremen
The Christmas atmosphere is already in the air near the banks of the river Weser, with boats reflecting the light of the holy port. Christmas in Bremen awaits you with the sweet aroma of smoked fish and freshly baked bread. From November 21 till December 23 the coast turns into a Christmas fairytale offering historical, seasonal and nautical entertainment. Musicians, craftsmen, market traders, jugglers and other street artists help create an atmosphere that feels like the middle ages. During the Christmas period, over 170 kiosks stretch over the city’s market square around Roland's statue. This is the best fair in Germany and the historic atmosphere, Christmas lights and cosy environment attracts many visitors each year.
Christmas markets
The Weinachtsmarkt is Bremen’s main Christmas market within the city’s Marktplatz which, every year, transforms itself into a winter wonderland. With the smell of roasting almonds and traditional German sausages in the air, it is the perfect time to take a stroll round the many Christmas stalls and socialise over a warm Glühwein. Take in the sight of the Christmas tree standing tall and twinkling bright, the Roland statue – a 600 year old statue which is the global symbol for freedom and market rights; and also the Bremen Town Musicians, which are the ‘pride and joy’ of the Hanseatic city and represents the heart of Bremen as a tribute to the popular fairy-tale by the Brothers Grimm.
The Schlachtezauber
The Schlachtezauber takes places along the Weser promenade which, every winter, transforms into a maritime Christmas wonder. It’s a very unique Christmas market that makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time and once the evening draws into night, the promenade is filled with a blue light. Walk along and explore the stalls baring goods from basket weavers and potters; there will be something for everyone. The city’s Böttcherstraße, with eye-catching architecture, will provide a great walk from the Schlachtezauber to the main Christmas market in the market square.
The Neustadt Lights
As you walk to the Neustadt district, you will be welcomed by yurt-like Christmas market stalls and a unique atmosphere offering a captivating mix of art and culture. If you are looking for unique Christmas gifts for loved ones (or yourself!) this is the perfect place to visit – from handmade jewellery and unique paintings to textile pieces, you will be immersed in German culture. This market offers a more artistic spin on Christmas traditions.
