The Curonian Spit
This natural spectacle is a peninsula on the coast of Lithuania characterised by its unique dune landscapes and fine white sand beaches. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 and is affectionately known by the locals as the "Pearl of the Baltic Sea" or "Lithuanian Sahara". The Lithuanian side includes a total of 52 km of the headland. The entire Spit has been declared a national park which will sustainably preserve the unique natural and cultural landscape for the future. In the middle of the Curonian Spit there is a border with Russia.
Directions to the peninsula
There is no road to the Curonian Spit but you can easily reach the area by ferry from Klaipeda. This hourly service arrives in the district Smiltyne in the north of the headland and can be travelled on by foot or by bicycle. In Smiltyne begins a well-developed cycle path, which leads you through the beautiful nature of the Lithuanian part to the village of Nida. Marvel at the beautiful view of the Baltic Sea or enjoy the very special charm that the small traditional fishing villages spray.
Adventure for beach and culture fans
The center of the Curonian Spit is the Lithuanian part where you can visit Nida - there you can find many hotels, restaurants and holiday homes. In addition to the many beautiful beaches for a perfect relaxing experience, there are also various sights to visit on the Curonian Spit. A true visitor magnet is the Thomas Mann house in the popular resort of Nida. The German writer spent his summer months writing some of his most famous works on the Curonian Spit - today the house is a cultural centre and museum. Culture lovers should also visit the Hermann Blode Museum, which has an exhibition room with details on well-known European personalities.
Attractions
Another highlight is the Hexenberg at Juodkrante - from here you have a beautiful view of the entire landscape. Along the signposted path through a pine forest, you will see some mystical wooden sculptures from the Lithuanian saga. Another place to visit is the Amber Bay - here, in the 19th century, visitors came upon the greatest amber treasure in history, with precious jewellery made of Lithuanian gold - the museum has exciting exhibits to admire and facts to learn. In Smiltyne, part of the Klaipeda district, there is also the marine museum with a dolphinarium - a popular attraction for the whole family.
