Rügen Island: A wildlife corner

Rügen Island is known as the sunniest place in the North of Germany and is the largest island where various luxury resorts are located. Famous for its white sandy beaches, this island is also surrounded by beautifully preserved nature.

Around the area

Binz is the largest seaside resort on the island of Rügen, with many wonderful 20th century villas. You can also visit other popular beach resorts such as Zelin and Gioren. Hiddensee is a small but cosy island near the cost of Rügen. Accessible only by foot, bicycle, horse-drawn carriage or by ferry, it’s the perfect place to relax. Cape Arkona is located in the north part of Rügen on the Wittow Peninsula. You can visit the temple of the god Svantevit, a ledgend of the Slavs who lived on the island in the XI century. Visit Zanisco for an area full of colourful boats, freshly caught fish, cosy restaurants and romantic sea views. Finally, Putbus is known for roses, traditional buildings and the famous theatre built at the start of the 19th century.

What to see

  1. Butterfly park: this park has over 140 species of butterflies. It’s open daily from 09.30 to 17.30 and entry ticket costs €6.90. More information is available at schmetterlingspark.
  2. Open air theatre: the theatre hosts 150 actors, 4 real ships and 30 horses. During a performance here, you will see burning houses, fireworks and plenty of special effects. For more information visit Stoertebeker.
  3. Fishermen and Port museum: The museum is full of exhibitions and information about what could be fished in the area. An old fishing boat is still visible from the pier. The museum is open daily from 10.00 till 18.00. More information available at hafenmuseum.
  4. World War II British Submarine: The military ship can be found at the port of Zasnico and you can visit every day from 10.00 to 19.00

Rügen Park and Jasmund National Park

At Rügen Park you can see miniature versions of popular landmarks such as the Colosseum, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and many more. There is also an amusement park with attractions for both adults and children. Address: 22b Mill Street. Gingst

Jasmund National Park is the most famous place on the Rügen Island with white chalk cliffs, forests and greenery making the park a haven for visitors who want to enjoy the unspoiled landscapes. The park is open 9am to 7pm and adult tickets are €6. More information is avalable at Koenigsstuhl.
