Getting to Rügen Island
DFDS offers several ferry routes that can be used to reach Rügen Island. From Newcastle, take our Ferry to Amsterdam and drive onwards to the Strelasund Crossing in approximately 9 hours. Or cross from Dover to Dunkirk or Calais with an onward journey time by car of approximately 14 hours. Alternatively, take our ferry from Klaipeda to Kiel, and drive from here to the island in around 2 hours.
Around the area
Binz is the largest seaside resort on the island of Rügen, with many wonderful 20th century villas. You can also visit other popular beach resorts such as Zelin and Gioren.
Hiddensee is a small but cosy island near the coast of Rügen. Accessible only by foot, bicycle, horse-drawn carriage, sailboat or ferry , it’s the perfect place to relax.
Cape Arkona is located in the north part of Rügen on the Wittow Peninsula. You can visit the temple of the god Svantevit, a ledgend of the Slavs who lived on the island in the XI century.
Visit Zanisco for an area full of colourful boats, freshly caught fish, cosy restaurants and romantic sea views.
Finally, Putbus is known for roses, traditional buildings and the famous theatre built at the start of the 19th century.
What to see
Rügen Island offers a range of activities for visitors to enjoy, including the butterfly park. where you can admire over 140 species of butterflies and get a close-up view of these colourful creatures.
For theatre goers, the open air theatre. hosts 150 actors, 4 real ships and 30 horses in their shows which include burning houses, fireworks and plenty of special effects.
Alternatively, visit the Fishermen and Port Museum providing exhibitions full of fascinating information on what could be fished in the area as well as an old fishing boat which is still visible from the pier. Also, don't miss the chance to visit the World War II British Submarine located at Zasnico port.
Rügen Park and Jasmund National Park
At Ruegenpark, you can be transported to some of the world's most iconic landmarks in miniature form. Alongside the miniature replicas, there’s also an amusement park with exciting attractions for adults and children alike.
A little further away lies Jasmund National Park – a stunning area of the island that must be seen to be believed! With white chalk cliffs, lush forests, and plenty of inviting greenery all around, it makes for a captivating sightseeing experience. The park is open from 9am to 7pm and adult entry tickets coast just €6.
